Are you going to Barcelona, Spain? Do you love food? Look no further because I have a list for you. I studied abroad in Barcelona for three months and it was the most amazing experience. My favorite thing to do was try new food and restaurants around the city. Here are my top 10. Feel free to comment if you try them or have any suggestions that should be added! Warning: this list may cause extreme hunger.
1. Carabella Cafe
Carabella's is located across from Barceloneta Beach and has a hipster vibe. The menu is packed with classic Mexican food favorites such as nachos, tacos, burrito and more. Their drink menu was decently sized and the drinks were muy grande! I loved the nachos and ended up ordering them with a strawberry daiquiri and veggie burrito everytime I went- which is more frequently than I care to admit. Carabella’s became my go-to restaurant during my time abroad and is in a great location for a quick stop on your way to or from the beach.
2. Alsur Cafe
Alsur Cafe has an amazing menu- I went back multiple times to try everything. They have flavored coffee that looks as good as it tastes- my favorite was the vanilla marshmallow latte, which was rainbow in color. The food menu follows in the coffee's greatness as everything I have ordered there has hit the spot. My favorite meal that I ordered was the grilled cheese waffle sandwich with bacon and avocado. IT WAS TO DIE FOR. It also came with homemade chips that were like a mix of a chip and a french fry. This is a chain so there are a few around Barcelona that you can find.
3. Da Greco
If you like Italian food Da Greco is a must see for you! I ordered the truffle ravioli and it was the best pasta I have ever tasted. The best part about the restaurant is that they bring a sample plate of everything people at the table order so that your friends can try your meal without taking a bite from you. It was awesome because I got to see if I wanted to try something else next time I went- in my opinion, the truffle ravioli is still the best thing on the menu. They also offer a student discount where you can bring your own bottle of wine so you don’t have to pay for one there.
4. Robata Sushi
If you like sushi, Robata is the best in Barcelona. It is the kind of sushi that melts in your mouth and has great flavor. The only downside is that it is a tad expensive.
5. Brunch and Cake
Did someone say brunch? Brunch and Cake is one of the best brunch places in Barcelona. They have a great menu and every entree is designed perfectly for an instagram photo. Everything is fresh and there are lots of healthy options. It is a really cute atmosphere as it is close to Barceloneta, so pair that with a good meal and I am obsessed. The tropical smoothie was so refreshing. As for food, my roommates and I have basically tried the whole menu and have never been disappointed.
6. Oizy Dumpling Bar
Oizy Dumping Bar was a great find on a random street corner. You can watch them make the dumplings through a store window and the flavor is beyond belief. I am usually not a fan of dumplings but this place single-handedly changed my mind. My favorite was the fried veggie dumplings. Make sure you dip them in the soy sauce because it has an extra kick that really adds to the flavor.
7. Tosca Tapas
You can’t go to Barcelona and not go to a tapas bar. Tapas are a classic part of the Catalonia culture. Usually people go to a tapas bar to get some food before a night of drinking. They are essentially appetizers for the table to share while you have some sangria and socialize. Every tapas bar I went to was amazing but I enjoyed this menu the most. YOU HAVE TO ORDER PATATAS BRAVAS! They are my favorite tapa of all time.
8. Rosa Negra
Rosa Negra is another Mexican food restaurant but they have an incredible drink menu and a Dia De Los Muertos vibe. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with festive skulls and bright colors and the drinks are cheap and delicious. The food is not as good as Carabella’s but it is still very good- I usually got the shrimp tacos and they never disappointed.
9. Los Caracoles
If you want to go where the famous people have been, go to Los Caracoles. You’ll know you're in the right place when you see rotisserie chicken in the window. This place had the best chicken and pretty good seafood too. The dessert was amazing- the chocolate lava cake was the perfect consistency. Overall, there are a lot of options and it is a family run place so they take a lot of pride in it. It is a bit expensive but the wall was filled with famous people who had eaten there so it must be one of the best.
10. Taco Alto
And finishing off the list at number 10 is Taco Alto. If you couldn't tell by the name, Taco Alto is another Mexican restaurant. Taco Alto lives up to its name and has some of the best tacos in Barcelona. However, I really enjoyed their quesadilla. It was the perfect amount of filling and when paired with their mango margarita I was on cloud 9 all day. It is a smaller place but it is decorated nicely and is a great price- definitely give it a try!
I hope you enjoy!
